How to Pack Books for Moving: A Fort Myers Mover's Guide

Two Chicks Moving | Serving Fort Myers, Cape Coral, Naples, Estero & Bonita Springs | Published October 6, 2026

Books are the one thing on almost every move that people underestimate. A shelf of novels looks harmless until it is packed in a large box that two of our movers can barely lift, with the bottom starting to give. As a mover in Fort Myers, Cape Coral, Naples, Estero, and Bonita Springs, we pack and carry a lot of home libraries, and the same few mistakes cause most of the damage. Here is how to pack books for moving so they arrive flat, dry, and in boxes that hold together.

The Short Answer: How to Pack Books for Moving

  1. Use small boxes. 1.5 cubic foot boxes, never large ones.
  2. Tape the bottom twice. An H pattern across the seam and both edges.
  3. Cushion the bottom. A layer of crumpled packing paper.
  4. Heaviest books first, flat. Large hardcovers on the bottom so they cannot warp.
  5. Fill upright, spines to the side. Never spine up. Alternate directions each layer.
  6. Fill every gap and seal. Paper in the gaps, keep the box under 40 lb, label it BOOKS, HEAVY.

What You Need to Pack Books

Small moving boxes1.5 cubic feet. Plan on one for every 20 hardcovers or 45 paperbacks.
Packing tapeAbout one roll for every 12 to 15 book boxes.
Packing paperPlain, unprinted paper for cushioning and wrapping. Newspaper ink can rub off.
A markerFor room, shelf number, and BOOKS, HEAVY on every box.
Rolling suitcasesOptional, and one of the easiest ways to move heavy books.

How to Pack Books in a Box, Step by Step

The best way to pack books for moving is in layers, from the heaviest books on the bottom to a cushioned, level top. This is how our crews pack every book box:

  1. Build and tape the box. Use an H pattern on the bottom: one strip along the center seam and one across each edge.
  2. Cushion the bottom with a layer of crumpled packing paper.
  3. Lay the heaviest hardcovers flat, largest first, so they cannot warp.
  4. Stand mid-size books upright with the spine against the side of the box, or lay them flat. Never spine up, because the pages pull on the binding.
  5. Fill the rest with paperbacks, alternating direction on each layer, and stuff every gap with paper so nothing slides.
  6. Add a paper layer and seal. Lift the box. If it feels heavier than about 40 pounds, take a few books out.

Best Way to Pack Books by Type

Not every book packs the same way. Pick the kind of books you have to see how they should go in the box.

Paperbacks

Upright or flat, packed snug

Paperbacks are light and flexible, so they bend if they have room to move. Pack them tightly, upright with the spine against the side of the box or flat in stacks. A small box takes about 40 to 50 and stays well under the weight limit.

Hardcovers

Flat on the bottom, or upright with spines to the side

Hardcovers carry most of a library's weight. Lay the largest flat on the bottom of the box, then stand mid-size ones upright. About 20 average hardcovers fill a small box at roughly 40 pounds, so do not try to squeeze in more.

Oversized and coffee table books

Flat only, largest on the bottom

Big art books and atlases warp if they stand on edge. Pack them flat, a few to a box, with the largest at the bottom and smaller ones stacked on top. A sheet of cardboard between layers keeps covers from scuffing.

Rare, signed, or leather-bound

Wrapped one by one, then flat

Wrap each book in clean packing paper or a soft cloth before it goes in the box, and pack it flat with books of the same size. Avoid newspaper, since the ink can transfer. Mark the box fragile and tell the crew which boxes hold these books.

Comics, magazines, and paper collections

Flat in sleeves or folders, never rolled

Thin paper creases easily. Keep comics in sleeves with backing boards, stack magazines flat, and fill the box so nothing can slide. Use smaller boxes than you think you need, since paper is heavy.

If you are packing a valuable collection, our professional packing services team can wrap and box it for you, and every box is marked so the crew loads it where it will not end up under heavier items.

Book Box Calculator

Count your books roughly by type to see how many small boxes and supplies you need, with every box kept under 40 pounds.

Rule of thumb: one small 1.5 cubic foot box holds about 40 to 50 paperbacks or about 20 average hardcovers. Keep each box under 40 pounds and plan on one roll of tape for every 12 to 15 boxes.

How to Pack Books Without Boxes

Boxes are the safest option, but they are not the only one. Here is how the common alternatives compare.

OptionVerdictWhy
Rolling suitcasesBest optionBuilt for weight, roll instead of being carried, and use space you are moving anyway.
Plastic bins with lidsGood for the moveStrong and stackable. Make sure books are fully dry, and do not use them for long-term storage in Florida.
Reusable moving totesGood for short movesSturdy and easy to carry when filled halfway. Overfilling makes them too heavy to lift.
Laundry basketsShort trips onlyFine for carrying books across town in your own car, but they cannot be stacked in a moving truck.
Trash bags or grocery bagsAvoidThey tear under the weight and let books bend, and they cannot be stacked or labeled clearly.

The Best Way to Move a Lot of Books

A home library of a few hundred books is a project, not an afternoon. These habits make it manageable and make unpacking much faster:

  • Start early. Books are one of the first things you can pack, since most people can go a few weeks without them. Our guide to what to pack first when moving puts them near the top of the list.
  • Pack one shelf at a time and number each box with the room and shelf, such as OFFICE, SHELF 3, BOX 2, so you can rebuild the library in order.
  • Label every box BOOKS, HEAVY on two sides and the top. That tells the crew to load it low in the truck under lighter boxes and carry it with two hands.
  • Keep a short list of anything rare or signed and which box it is in.
  • Unpack within a few days so books are not sitting in boxes longer than they need to.

Protecting Books From Southwest Florida Humidity

In Southwest Florida, moisture does more damage to books than rough handling. Paper absorbs humidity quickly, and a box of books left in a hot garage or a storage unit without climate control can come out warped, musty, or spotted with mildew. The Library of Congress preservation guidance points to a stable space without extremes of heat or humidity. Check how risky your plan is:

Books are safest in the air-conditioned house or a climate-controlled storage unit. A garage or a storage unit without climate control is risky for more than a few days, especially from May to October, and books sealed in plastic in those places can trap moisture.

If there is a gap between your move-out and move-in dates, our article on whether you need climate-controlled storage in Southwest Florida explains when it is worth it for the rest of your belongings, too.

Should You Pack Books Yourself or Hire Packers?

Books are one of the easiest things to pack yourself, because they are not fragile the way glassware is. They are, however, slow to pack well, and a large library can take a full day. Many of our customers pack their books a few weeks ahead and leave the kitchen and fragile items to our crew. If you would rather hand off all of it, our team can pack the whole house as part of your local moving day.

Local Area Guide: Voters Secure Funding for the Bonita Estero Rail Trail

If you are settling into Estero or Bonita Springs, there is good news for anyone who likes to walk or bike: voters approved a $35 million bond referendum toward the Bonita Estero Rail Trail, known locally as BERT. The money goes toward buying an 11.4-mile inactive rail corridor that will run from northern Collier County through downtown Bonita Springs and into Estero. The full purchase price is $60 million, shared between Collier County's Conservation Collier program, the City of Bonita Springs, and the Village of Estero.

The project is now in due diligence, with appraisals, title work, and environmental review ahead of a closing targeted for October. After that, the railway has up to two years to remove the tracks before construction starts. When it is finished, the trail is expected to connect neighborhoods with Coconut Point, the Estero entertainment district, and Estero River Park along one continuous path.

It is still a couple of years from breaking ground, but it is a good sign of the long-term investment going into the area. See how our Estero movers help households settle in, from Coconut Point to Corkscrew Road.

    Packing Books for Moving: FAQs

Should you pack books flat or upright?

Both work, as long as the spine never faces up. Lay large hardcovers flat so they cannot warp, and stand smaller books upright with the spine against the side of the box. Spine-down also works for sturdy books. Spine-up pulls the pages away from the binding.

How many books fit in a moving box?

A small 1.5 cubic foot moving box holds about 40 to 50 paperbacks or about 20 average hardcovers. Weight is the real limit: keep every book box under about 40 pounds so it can be carried safely and the bottom does not give way.

What is the best way to move a lot of books?

Pack them in small boxes, a shelf at a time, starting a few weeks before the move. Label every box with the room and a shelf number so you can rebuild the library in order, and load book boxes low in the truck under lighter boxes.

Can you pack books in plastic bins?

For the move itself, yes, as long as the books are completely dry. For storage in Southwest Florida, avoid sealing books in plastic for long periods, since trapped humidity can lead to mildew. Breathable cardboard boxes in a cool, dry space are safer.

How do you pack books without boxes?

Rolling suitcases are the best option, since they are built for weight and roll instead of being carried. Sturdy reusable totes and plastic bins also work for short moves. Avoid trash bags and grocery bags, which tear and let books bend.

Do movers charge extra to move books?

Local moves are billed by the hour, so books only add cost through the time it takes to carry them. Small, well-taped, clearly labeled book boxes move faster than a few overloaded large ones.
